ABEX Corporation's railroad wheel casting complex, a 428,000 sq.ft. facility near Johnstown, Pennsylvania, is a classic example of our expertise.
Foundry construction at full throttle. This facility, the largest and most modern of its kind in the world, can produce 400,000 railroad car wheels a year. The plant comprises a melt shop with three 35-ton electric arc furnaces, two mold lines with cooling conveyors, three rotary heat treating furnaces, two hot peening machines, and a complete machine shop for finishing the product.
We were awarded the responsibility of constructing the entire complex. This included site preparations, building and equipment foundations, erection, and the installation of all the foundry process equipment. We also put in the roadway and a 3 span bridge for access to the plant, and three miles of railroad track along with a 5 span railroad bridge to handle the product shipments. We completed the project within 15 months of the groundbreaking--six months ahead of schedule.
